"Oh, they say when you marry in June you're a bride all your life, and the bridegroom who marries in June gets a sweet-heart for a wife.”
— lyrics from Seven Brides for Seven Brothers

We’ve all heard the term “June Bride,” but have you ever wondered why so many people get married in June? Here in New Orleans where June can be hotter than you know what, we thought we’d take a minute to ponder why so many people get married here in this month. Here’s what we found out.

Apparently, June is popular as a wedding month for many reasons including tradition, superstition and practical advantages. The name "June" itself comes from the Roman goddess Juno. In ancient Rome, Juno was the goddess of marriage, home, and childbirth. The month of June was dedicated to her, and it was believed that couples who married in June would be blessed with prosperity and happiness.

The Victorian tradition of using fresh flowers at weddings also contributed to June's popularity. Here in New Orleans, you’ll find fresh hydrangeas, roses, magnolias, hibiscus and bird of paradise.

Also, in some cultures, marrying during the harvest season (which often includes June) is considered lucky. It symbolizes abundance and prosperity.

And then there are the practical advantages of a June wedding. In most places, June offers pleasant weather for outdoor celebrations. Also, the longer daylight hours of summer allow for extended celebrations and more flexibility for travel. School breaks alos make it easier to coordinate with everybody’s busy schedules. The popularity of the month also might be a throwback to the days when people got married young — right after May graduation.
